Project Honda Civic EJ: Skunk2 Suspension Upgrades Part 2

,

What drew us to the Skunk2 front camber kit were two significant design features that differentiated themselves from the more common camber kit design. First, the adjuster took out the biggest complaint I had about the other camber kits. The Skunk2 kit is designed to be adjusted from the bottom up through captive allen bolts whereas the more standard camber kit designs have a hex nut and bolt that needs to be accessed from both sides. This reduces the pain-in-the-ass factor when adjusting the camber. Anything that reduces the pain-in-the-ass factor when working on a car is worth its weight in gold, in my book.  This is especially true when you're doing it at the track.

Secondly, most camber kit ball joints allow for about 20-25 degrees of articulation, whereas Skunk2 designed a ball joint with a larger ball and longer slot to allow up to 35 degrees of articulation, eliminating dangerous binding during suspension travel.   The Skunk ball joints have a strong forged ball and body and are very low profile. Being almost flat at the top allows for maximum clearance to the top of the shock tower.

Finally the arms pivot on hard urethane bushings instead of rubber.  This reduces flex keeping the suspensions geometry true under hard cornering loads.  Unlike rubber bushings that twist and will bind in a lowered car, the Skunk bushings are a three piece design that is made to rotate without bind.  This reduces stiction which will improve ride and ultimately grip during cornering.

The square portion of the upper control arm where the ball joint bolts to, is larger than most camber kits. This allows for more clamped surface engagement for less likelyhood of slipping and also has longer slots for more adjustability.  This gives you the most flexibility in setting your alignment and ride height.  The main limit in ride height now will now be the actual clearance of the upper arm in the shock tower

The Skunk 2 arms has hard polyurethane bushings compared to the rubber that our old arms had. The bushings and ball joints are avalible as replacement parts.

Our old camber link was showing it's age, check out the worn and cracking rubber bushings.

Although I had a rear camber kit that served me well for the last several years, it was time to replace these worn out parts with a fresh set. It doesn't matter how good the part is, after nearly a decade of use, parts fatigue and eventually give up the ghost. Depending on the design of the part, some parts wear out sooner than others. Unfortunately for my old set, the kit design did not allow for the bushings to be replaced.  Not only were the bushings not replaceable, they were also not free to rotate in the same manner that the Skunk2 polyurethane bushings are allowed to. This made them more susceptible to tearing and cracking.
