The factory igniter (P/N: 30120-PR7-A01) is the black box that sits on top of the intake manifold, just after the throttle body. These igniters are now 30 years old and were frequent sources of ignition related issues when making a lot of power back in the day. At ~$500, replacing a blown igniter is more expensive than upgrading to a full set of (6) K-coils.
We removed the factory NSX coils in preparation for the new K-coils.
The original NSX coils are substantially larger than the newer “smart” K-coils.
It’s pretty impressive to see the improvements in technology comparing the old “dumb” NSX coil pack to the modern “smart” coil with built-in igniter.
The NSX coil uses 2 bolts to hold the large, heavy coil in place. The smaller K-coil only uses 1 bolt, which requires a mounting adapter bracket to be installed in the NSX valve cover.

I forgot about this project! 9000+ rpm from an NSX is going to sound sweet.
Give us an update on Project Viper, too 😉
i’m interested in why you chose to run stock fuel lines/ filter but upgraded your pump for e85?
The upgraded fuel pump has not been installed yet (and has been changed since the original fuel pump article). An updated article on the new fuel pump and upgrading the whole fuel system from the lines to the filter, injectors, and rails will be featured in an upcoming article. Stay tuned!
