Project S2000: Part 24 – Bridgestone Potenza RE-71Rs and DIY Brake Ducts

,

The second attempt was much cleaner than the first. Lessons learned right?
So here are the ghetto DIY ducts for less than the cost of a few Jacksons (I had to look on a $20). The most time consuming part of the whole thing was drilling all the holes for the sheet metal screws because I did each hole in three steps. I used my trusty Dewalt drill for that. I have some high-tech machine shop tools I tell ya!
Here’s the DIY duct bolted up to the control arm. I used a ½” bolt, two washers, and a nylon locking nut to secure everything. The nylon nut is to make sure it doesn’t vibrate off of course.
I had more material, so I made some rear brake ducts as well. I know I know…. It only took me a handful of years to get around to it. The mounting point is the rear chassis brace.
To make the rear brackets, I used the 1.5” aluminum angle along with a sheet metal corner bracket. The length of the aluminum strip is 14.5” inches. I just happened to have 29” of the stuff left and cut it in half for the two sides. Fortunately, it was long enough.
To get in some track testing, I headed out to Streets of Willow with Speedventures. I did a bit more bending of the aluminum strips to better aim the front ducts.
I pulled down on the front of the ghetto duct to get it about the same height as my plastic duct on the other side.
