Project S2000: Part 17 – Testing Temps and Tools (Replay Camera and IR Pyrometer)

,

There are two features I really like about the Replay that my other camera did not have.  The first is the vibration feedback when you turn on/off the camera and start/stop recording.  Cars are loud.  Race tracks are loud.  Helmets muffle noise.  A ‘beep’ is hard to hear, but you can feel the Replay vibrate to let you know it has turned on/off and started/stopped recording.  The other is setting the Auto Exposure.  How many in-car videos have you watched where everything out the windshield is washed out in white?  With the Replay, you can set it to ‘spot’ which makes sure the view out the windshield is of the proper exposure.

You adjust the settings of the camera by modifying this text file.  All of the values have explanations and the possible settings at the bottom of the text file.

My other test was using the Replay suction mount to take some external video.  Just like the camera body, this mount is beefy.  It is made out of a solid chunk of T6-6061 aluminum and it’s strong as hell.  Much stronger than my old suction mount made out of plastic.  Because I was mounting the camera externally, I knew I would need the windbreakers.  However, my lame butt forgot them at home, so I had to improvise.

I did bring the Replay stickers with me for some reason.  It’s thicker than the windbreaker from what I can tell, but it would have to do the job.  I used my box-cutter to cut off a slice and tape over the mic hole at the track.  I didn’t take a picture of me doing it at the track, so I took a picture of my handiwork once I got home.   And yes, I did have the fastest time of the week at K1 in Torrance at that point which was second fastest for the month; I just checked and that time is down to 33rd for the month now.  So below is the video with my ghetto windbreaker.
