Project S2000: Part 17 – Testing Temps and Tools (Replay Camera and IR Pyrometer)

,

I’m finally starting to run low on rear pad.  I guess I should order new ones and I might even install the new brake rotors that have been sitting on the shelf for the past two years.

There’s still quite a bit of front pad left.  I’ll worry about them in another 3 track days and/or 20k miles.

Second track day on the NT01s along with some street driving.

Even though it was really freakin cold, there are nearly an infinite number of worse ways to spend a day than a track day with friends.  I also learned a few new things.  First off, I really like the Replay camera as it’s easy to mount and operate.  I used the base camera settings for contrast, saturation, etc and I think the quality is very good right out of the box.  Compare the image quality from this camera and my previous videos and draw your own conclusions.  The Replay also has a lot of available accessories including a handle bar mount that I’ll be testing shortly to make up for the video I owe Colin.  Secondly, Tim’s S2000 proved to be the perfect reproduction of my brake temperature testing results.  Even better, we had the Evo for another comparison data point.  Next, I’m really impressed with how good the Nitto NT01s are over a wide temperature range and especially in the cold.  My old Bridgestones would easily take a handful of laps to get some grip in them in similar cold conditions.  Seeing the difficulty of the two guys in Corvettes and the Atom on Hoosiers highlighted just how good the NT01s were in the cold.  Lastly, I wanted to give a shout out to the MotoIQ readers at the track (240sx, Miata, S2k, Evo, M5).

A parting shot chasing the Ariel Atom around.  Can’t go wrong with 300hp in an Atom; well, except when you can’t get heat in the tires, but that just makes for a more interesting ride.
