Project SC300 Road Racer: Part 17 – Get out there! Or not…

Damnit strikes again.

You might remember that this car is named Damnit, and that it’s haunted. You might also remember that it has a history of misbehaving. It also has a bit of history with trailers and towing. When I first got the car and was towing it home, we ended up with a huge blowout on my E350 van that was a fun (in retrospect) story.

On the way to our re-debut track day, wouldn’t you know that we had an explosive delamination on a trailer tire. And, of course, it happened on a Sunday at around 7:00AM, and no tire shops were open. After a bunch of phone calls and other shenanigans, we were able to get two trailer tires replaced by some nice folks at Walmart and got ourselves back on…

the road.

To the track.

Only about an hour and a half late.

But James who runs JZilla is a really nice guy and he let us miss the driver’s meeting and still drive anyway. So, in the end, we only missed one session. Not bad!

We were on the track! Under our own power!

The moment was finally here. The car was on track. We were doing what we had built it to do!

For 8/10ths of a lap. Before the whole course got red and then black flagged. And we had to come back into the pits.

The next session was here!

Now we were finally getting into it. The car felt good. The brakes were still a little funky but they weren’t super awesome the last time I remember driving it. Maybe they’d need to be bled a little more. Maybe now there was a little extra rear bias.

We started to pick up a little speed. We started to get comfortable.

We brought Tom with us to provide some track side assistance.

He made sure that the tires were aired up, that the fluids were topped up, and was watching the car on track and was just about to start taking some lap times.

Until I disappeared.

For the rest of the session.

And they were confused.

  1. Small world indeed. I have been keeping up with your build for a while. Very envious of the wiring job. The CD-7 is a great product but it is so new that there isn’t much guidance on how to customize. We may be swapping to an AIM product.

    1. If you need any help with your CD-7 just let me know. Happy to dig into it. AEM tech support is also super helpful. Let me know next time you come through Atlanta!
