Project Toyota Supra MKIV, Part 5: Thermal coating and wrapping, and engine assembly

,

During a rebuild you'll want to start with new gaskets, seals and o-rings.  Champion Toyota, which has the best online pricing around for factory Toyota parts, sells an engine gasket and seal kit.  It comes with everything you'll need, including valve seals, manifold gaskets, cam cover gaskets, front and rear main seals, and a five-layer metal head gasket that has been proven to sustain our anticipated cylinder pressures.

A shot of our 1mm-oversized, Ferrea-sealed combustion chambers before they disappear as well.

Keeping the head bolted down with anticipated cylinder pressures requires a lot of clamping force, and you need good head studs to do it.  ARP's latest are their Custom Age Plus 625 head studs, featuring a new super-alloy capable of over a 260,000 PSI tensile strength (the point at which a failure occurs), the same as the popular L19 studs and 18% more than the ARP 2000s.

ARP bolt threads are rolled after heat treatment, providing up to ten times more strength over fasteners with threads rolled prior to heat treatment.  Still, ARP packages the studs nicely with thread-protecting sleeves. While the ARP 2000s call for an 85 ft-lb torque rating, the CA625's take a whopping 100 ft-lb!

While the tensile strength is similar to that of the L19, the CA625-plus' yield strength—or the force required to cause a permanent deformation—is a minimum 235,000 PSI, as compared to 200,000 PSI for the L19 and 2000.  Also, it offers complete resistance against atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, unlike the L19s, which are actually subject to stress corrosion if not properly oiled.
