Road Trip: Bavaria and the BMW Museum

After the first World War BMW saw an opportunity in the motorized two-wheeled market.  The company produced motorcycles for 10 years before their first car. This is BMW's first motorcycle, the R32, which was first produced in 1923.

The R32 featured a 486cc 8.5hp engine, the original of the motorcycle boxer engines.

What a way to end the BMW Musuem tour- the 1972 BMW turbo concept used the 2.0L inline 4 cylinder engine from the 2002 equipped with a turbocharger.  The car included safety features such as a collapsible steering column and integrated roll cage, gullwing doors, and rear tire covers.  Only two of these cars were ever produced, though they did influence the design of the 1978 M1 and later the Z1 and 8 series cars.

The pictures don't do the BMW Museum justice.  If motor oil runs through your veins like mine, if you have battle scars from doing engine swaps, if you can appreciate the beauty of a dynasty of German automaking (minus the typical electrical gremlins), you've got to check it out yourself.  Exhibitions change often and you can gorge yourself on pretzels and sausages and drink liters of Hefeweizens after the museum closes.  It's the motor vehicle mecca of Munich!
