
First, we removed the factory battery by unbolting the two nuts that keep the hold down strap in place.

We can now remove the hold down strap. You can see how high the battery is mounted on the firewall. This means that it is working to raise the center of gravity in the front of the car. This can affect the car’s responsiveness and turn in as well as contribute to understeer.

Next, we removed a side hold down clamp from the battery tray and disconnected the terminals.

We lifted out the stock battery. The factory battery has thoughtful carrying handles built into it. The stock battery weighed 46 lbs.

Next, we removed the bolts holding the stock battery tray in place. This allowed us to lift it up and disconnect two electronic modules that are bolted to the bottom of the stock tray. More on this later.

The stock battery tray could now be removed.

The regular RS has a pretty light magnesium roof, the carbon one shaves 1.1 lbs off the top, not too much, more of a cosmetic and marketing thing. Lighter carpet and some minor interior stuff shave off another pound. I think most of the weight savings on the car side comes from the carbon sway bars, something like 11-12 lbs. The battery makes a bigger difference in CG height and weight distribution that any of these parts. The Weissach package wheels are not part of the car package but yet another option. These probably make a difference due to the compound effect of unsprung and rotating weight but it would be interesting to see if the stiffness is affected. I am not sure if you have seen Billy Johnson’s study of that on a GT3.
