Save 42 Pounds off of your car with Lite Blox Batteries!

  • Mike Kojima

The stock battery tray is stamped out of heavy steel weighing 2lbs 11 oz.  The LITE BLOX mounting bracket is made out of carbon fiber and weighs only 9 oz.  That is more than 2 lb savings! So the stock battery and bracket weigh 48 lbs 11 oz. when you subtract the weight of the LITE BLOX battery and bracket which is 6 lbs 10 oz you end up with an amazing weight savings of 42 lbs 1 oz!  In their literature, LITE BLOX claims an incredible saving of 54 lbs for the GT3. Somehow the weight we came up with is 12 lbs short of their claims.

We think this weight difference is because the American market must get a battery that is much smaller than the European market where the car will experience much colder winters.  When you look at the battery tray above, you can see the three spot welded threaded inserts for the battery hold down clamp on the middle left of the battery tray. The tray is much larger than needed for the battery that came in the car.  For our car, the clamp was in the most inboard position for the smallest possible battery. You can see that the tray has provisions for two larger size batteries, so the car Lite Blox must have used for their weights must have had a bigger battery for the colder European market. In no way are we complaining about saving an easy 42 lbs though!

Another minor issue we discovered is that the LITE BLOX battery mount only has provisions for one of the two electronics modules attached to the OEM battery mount. We think that the US market car has additional stuff on it that the European model must not have.

So we had to drill our own mounting holes for the second module. It’s too bad because the LITE BLOX mount had cool molded-in threaded inserts for the other module.

After determining the exact location of the module on the stock battery tray which is important so the wire harness fits, we drilled some new mounting holes for it.

Then we found some stainless steel button head allen bolts with nylock nuts.

The regular RS has a pretty light magnesium roof, the carbon one shaves 1.1 lbs off the top, not too much, more of a cosmetic and marketing thing. Lighter carpet and some minor interior stuff shave off another pound. I think most of the weight savings on the car side comes from the carbon sway bars, something like 11-12 lbs. The battery makes a bigger difference in CG height and weight distribution that any of these parts. The Weissach package wheels are not part of the car package but yet another option. These probably make a difference due to the compound effect of unsprung and rotating weight but it would be interesting to see if the stiffness is affected. I am not sure if you have seen Billy Johnson’s study of that on a GT3.

There is a chance that ultralight wheels can make the car slower.
