Sebring 2013: The Following

delta wing

The DeltaWing is now under the control of Don Panoz.  This year saw Bridgestone come on as the tire supplier replacing Michelin and Elan Power Products creating the engine replacing the former Nissan-branded engine (I say branded because it was mostly something else, though it used the same throttle body as the Nissan Juke I think).

Unfortunately for the DeltaWing, trying to put together an endurance racing engine in six weeks often leads to failure; the engine let go early in the race.

Moving on to turns 3, 4, and 5 you get to see flames spewing from the exhausts as racers cut the corner and sometimes launch one side of the car off of the curbing. The quick right/left into turn 3 and then 4 sometimes provide a little tail waggle as the drivers correct and get their cars back on the racing line. There are great passing opportunities and watching two racers weave side by side is something that will make you hold your breath.

The long walk from turn 5 to 7 brings so many great engine sounds as cars fly by. Flat sixes, throaty American V8s, the higher strung Italian V8s. You get to watch the prototypes overtaking the GTs, or even a drag race between class competitors, as they see who blinks first to brake for the hairpin. So many things can happen at the hairpin. Braking too late can result in someone going off course or into a competitor, overtaking, better acceleration out of 7 for an opportunity for a pass in 8, 9, or 10.
