The CSF EvoX Racecar Build – The Beginning

  • Martin Gonzales

Sheepey Built constructed our turbo system from 321 stainless using exquisite craftsmanship. The exhaust manifold has equal length tuned runners, back purged TIG welds, a CNC machined head flange, a handmade merged collector, titanium up-pipes and JDM style pie cuts on the visible parts of the super short exhaust system to maximize show car points!

Sheepey Built also handled the fabrication of the rest of the turbo system plumbing.

The intercooler was built by Sheepey using CSF’s super efficient and strong B-Tube core.  The B-Tube is CSF’s trademark tube/plate that has an internal bridge that both strengthens the tube and adds more surface area for heat conduction to the outside of the tube and the fins. When sectioned the tube looks like a flattened letter B – hence the name B tube.

Sheepey constructed the tapered intercooler end tanks from TIG welded aluminum sheet for good flow while minimizing the internal volume for better throttle response and less lag. Intercooler sizing was kept to the minimum needed for the job, again for better response and for potential aero advantages later.

For a blow off valve a Turbosmart Race Port BOV was selected. Turbosmart was again tapped on the shoulder for this build, because the Race Port BOV is the smallest and lightest BOV with a high flow capacity – 330 CFM! Like the wastegate, the BOV’s top can be clocked in multiple positions for good installation flexibility.

The charge and intercooler piping use Hydraflow 14J21 flexible fluid couplers instead of the usual silicone hose and hose clamps. The Hydraflow clamps totally eliminate any chances of the charge pipes blowing off under high boost operation.

The Hydraflow clamps are available through Burns Stainless and consist of two ferrule tubes that are welded to the charge pipes. A billet clamshell assembly clamps the ferrules together while viton fluoro-elastomer o-rings eliminate any leakage.

The Hydraflow clamp can withstand up to 125 psi of boost pressure and temperatures up to 450 degrees.  The clamp has positively clicking latches that can easily be hand operated making the Hydraflow clamp tool-less in use and quick release in nature. Just what’s needed for parts that may have to be removed quickly.

when is someone gonna use Garrett’s new G series turbos? this seams like the perfect candidate…

Those turbos were just announced at last year’s SEMA show, but you’ll be seeing results soon. I’m sure the first batches of those turbos went to race teams and they’re more concerned about winning than writing articles about their results 😉

We do have a few leads on some back to back testing that’s coming up that will make for the exact content you’re looking for. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Shooting for sometime this year. Getting one of these EvoXs to go fast has not been a plug and play affair. We’ll let you guys in on all the details with the rest of the series.

so I know I’m late to the party, but I’m just now reading the full article… I want air jacks on my street car… pull up somewhere, park the car, and bam! my car is in the air, primed and ready to get my wheels stolen

At least it won’t get messed up by falling off crates.
