Extreme Engine Tech: Building a BMW S52 – Part 2: The Cylinder Head

,

Since the VANOS unit tends to wear out a new VANOS unit was installed.  VANOS is BMW's variable cam timing system that controls the advance and retard of the intake cam.  The intake cam is retarded at idle, for smoothness and low emissions, the cam is then advanced for better bottom end and mid range, then retarded at high RPM for the best top end.  VANOS helps give a much wider powerband, less emissions and better fuel economy.
This oil splash shield helps keep oil from being sucked out the breather for the PCV system and helps return oil to the pan faster.  The shield also probably improves vavetrain lubrication by keeping the oil in closer proximity to the cam and lifters.
Valve cover on, ready for dressing and install into our car.

Now that our short block is officially a long block we'll be looking at our cooling upgrades in the next article. What's the point of building a new engine and watching it bleed to death when the stock radiator, water pump or fan decides to give up the ghost? BMW E36 owners are all too aware that these three components are known failure points, stay tuned to read how we fix that.
