Grand Am: Road America 2013

Dane Cameron in the #42 Sahlen BMW Riley held the lead for first half of the race, and retook the lead later until a driveline failure ended their day. There were multiple lead changes in the last hour, but the #8 Starworks BMW riley finished on top, followed by both the #5 and #9 Action Express Corvettes.

A heartbreaking day for the Sahlen team.
The Spirit of Daytona DP Corvette was never in the running.

The GT battle was equally exciting. The Ferrari’s started off strong, with the lead changing between the #63, #61, and #64, while battling the Magnus and Park Place Porsches, Turner BMWs, and the Stevenson Camaro. The #31 Corvette went out early with a driveline failure, and while the Fall Line Audi R8 ran in practice, it never started the race. Bill Auberlen, in his 500th race start, charged through the pack and ultimately worked his way from 4th to 2nd, while chasing down Pat Long in the #73 Park Place 911. After a few laps of trying to take the lead in turn 1 and three, Bill made it stick while late braking into turn 5. He kept the lead to the finish.
