Project DBA R35 GT-R: Starting the Suspension Revolution with KW Suspension and Forged Performance

,

Our plans for the car include significantly larger wheels and tires to get a lot more rubber on the ground, as much as we can practically stuff into the stock wheel wells. In our experience, putting bigger tires means more grip and more grip equates to a lot more body roll.

To counter it, we did not want to greatly increase our spring rate. We felt that the GT-R is a very rough riding car from the factory, and more stiffness in the coilovers would just make things worse.

Instead, we opted to use Forged Performance sway bars. From our research, Forged Performance bars are the stiffest off-the-shelf bars made for the GT-R. We, in particular, wanted a proportionally stiffer rear bar, as the stock rear bar is ridiculously small. It’s so small that we feel that it hardly does anything. The fact that GT-R’s tend to understeer heavily, especially when their tires get hot, also supports this theory.

The Forged Performance bars come with great endlinks, built very robustly to handle the stress of stiff bars.

They use stout construction and Teflon lined spherical bearings which couple the bar very directly.

The Forged Performance front sway bar on the bottom is 38.4mm in diameter, as opposed to the stock 34mm, for a maximum increase in stiffness at 133%. It is also 2-way adjustable.

The sway bar is hollow in order to remain light weight and is constructed of 1096 spring steel for a long service life. It is powdercoated, and all of the included hardware is stainless steel for superior durability as well.

Having the end links adjustable in length means that the cornerweights can be set with no sway bar binding.

The rear Forged Performance sway bar as shown on top is a whopping 24mm in diameter, up from the stock amazingly wimpy 14mm.

This equates to an over 800% increase in stiffness over stock. You could actually easily bend the stock bar in the car by hand. Like the front bar, the rear bar is constructed of tubular 1096 spring steel, which helps greatly keep the weight down.
