Project Focus ST – Making Power with Cobb Tuning!

,

The Cobb Tuning rear motor mount's urethane bushing is 85A on the durometer scale making it a midway hard bushing. You can see the holes for controlled vibration reducing compliance here a little better.  With the motor mount we should experience less wheelhop, no clunking noise during hard shifts and better shifting overall.  Most users report only a mild increase in vibration. The gains in vibration are reportedly only felt when stopped at idle with the air conditioning on.
We will also be installing Cobb Tuning's antisway bar kit.  The antiswaybar kit is much stiffer than the stock parts at 27mm front and 25 mm in the rear which is about 100% stiffer than stock. The bars are accurately CNC bent which can mimic the complex shape of factory bars for a perfect fit.  Looking at the front bar in particular, you can see the complex geometry needed to fit in it's tight confines. The swaybars feature thrust washers that are welded in place to keep the bar in position as it articulates, a really nice touch.
The Cobb bars come with stiff polyurethane bushings that have zerk fittings and large internal grooves to retain grease. The bushings also have molded in lips to help prevent the grease from just squishing out.  Urethane bushings tend to squeak and the ability to grease them with no disassembly needed is a good thing.
The front bar uses the stock end links and is of fixed stiffness.  The stock end links have ball joints and are quite stiff as is.  No upgrade needed .
The rear bars are two position adjustable.  Like the front bar, the rear bar uses the stock factory ball joint equipped endlinks.  Putting the rear endlinks in the hole closest to the car makes the bar stiffer, moving it back makes the bar softer.  The adjustment makes about a 20% percent change in bar stiffness which is enough to be felt when setting up the car.

In the next segment of Project Focus ST we will install the Cobb Tuning goodies, fire up the Access Port and give her a tune via Cobb's packaged programs.  Then we will visit Cobb SoCal and see if we can gain anything more with custom programing for the individual car.  Since the prepackaged tunes are built around these parts we doubt there is much to gain but we will give it a try.
