Project V8 E46 M3 Racecar: Adding KW Motorsport Suspension and StopTech Trophy Big Brakes!

,

Our rear brakes are also huge. They use StopTech’s 4-piston ST40 caliper with a 355x32mm rear rotor.

The rear brakes are also from StopTech’s Trophy catalog with all the same features we discussed with the front calipers such as lightening CNC-milling and a hard anodized finish.

Like the front caliper, the ST40 has a beefy bridge to ensure stiffness. Note the CNC-pocketing to reduce weight.

The ST40 rear caliper also has differential piston sizing, high-temperature dust boots, stainless steel pad abutments and extensive lightening milling on the bottom side of the forging as well.

The rear rotors are very much like the front, except they have a smaller 355mm diameter.

Since this is a racecar, there is no provision for a parking brake. Who needs the extra weight!

These brackets adapt the radial mount StopTech caliper to the factory ear mount knuckles. They are CNC-machined out of 6061 aluminum alloy and anodized for corrosion resistance.

The calipers are mounted using NAS style aircraft grade long shank studs. This is important because these parts are in shear.

Our StopTech brakes came with braided steel lines. These Teflon lined hoses resist swelling with pressure and offer improved pedal feel. Stoptech hoses are also DOT approved and pass the tough whip test, not that that matters that much for a race car but they are fully street legal.

So we are just starting on our trip to complete Project E46 M3 Racecar. Currently, we are looking at drivetrain and electronic solutions to get our car running. Stay tuned- this project will be a long one, but in the end, we will end up having a pretty cool car!
