Returning after 3 destroyed gearboxes last year, and this year rocking a Hollinger sequential gearbox behind a freshly rebuilt Tomei 2.8L stroked RB26 producing just over 1000 wheel HP, Peter Gray rolled surprised everyone with an impressive 324km/hr pass to put himself in contention for the crown.
David Christie, who achieved 3rd place last year, and running today after his gearbox let go on Saturday afternoon, drove it 400km home to swap in a spare, and drove 400km back again overnight. Sadly on its first fully powered pass, it snapped another input shaft and was put back on the trailer.
Having been relegated to using his father’s car, which thankfully happens to also be a Twin Turbo LS powered VT Commodore (tough gig right?) – the foot was kept buried for a 314km/hr pass, finally putting him into the exclusive “300 club.”
Another interesting car was Royce Hall’s 4 Door R32 Skyline. Not the most loved shape of the series, this car runs an RB25DET making just over 900hp at the wheels. With a Garret GTX4249r, Plazmaman intake and cooler, ARP head studs, Tomei Poncams, and Nitto head gasket, matched to wait for it, a stock bottom end!
In the very final pass of the day he also managed to sneak into the elite “300 Club” much to the crowd’s appreciation.
Sunday afternoon saw local GTR legend Ant “Yoda” Scali arrive with his infamous R32 GTR “ND4SPD.” Having been gradually built and improved each year (taking out the event in 2015), and driven by local madman driver Steve Jones, they ran a few passes to get settled in before the big runs.
Unfortunately they were plagued with gearbox issues and could only manage 4th place with a 316km/hr run, albeit with the fastest ET of the event across the line as a consolation prize.
In the end, there can be only one winner, and its Eddy Tassone in his Twin Turbocharged VZ GTO, with a top speed of 334.96 km/hr.
I’m sure he would have broken the Australian record had it not been for the 30-40km/hr headwind.
This car is actually setup for 400m drag racing, running an 8.25 @170mph previously, from a 1500hp+ 460ci LS motor.
Running an RHS block, Mast Mozes heads and a pair of huge precision 76/75 turbo’s – it’s taken years of fettling to get to its current standard.
