Nerd’s Eye View: 2013 Performance Racing Industry Show

,

Borg Warner is a nerd's paradise. Here we devote an entire page to what seems to be pictures of the same turbo but lets get “nerdy” with it. Here you can see the aluminum center section with the coolant ports. This section reduces weight and features two ports on each side of the CHRA. 4 coolant ports allow you to configure the coolant lines for just about any situation imaginable! Super helpful for integration into many different applications. I can see it on a Subaru application where they use two ports on the same side in a top to bottom configuration.

The above two pictures show the blade design to create a mixed flow scenario. You can see the difference in the blade height between the two wheels and also how it aligns with the housing. The wheel is made from a Gamma-Ti material and the wheel profile affords both greater flow and lower inertia over a radial flow turbine wheel.
One might look at the angle of the internal wastegate discharge and remark how it has been improved to better mix with the turbine discharge. One might even look at the casting and remark how amazing it is and how the v band discharge is super trick on an internally gated turbo. THIS NERD would remark at the multiple hole sets on the comp. housing. Because the comp housing is secured with a V-band you can literally rotate the compressor housing to suit your application needs and the multiple holes in the housing allow you to align the IWG bracket without the need to make new brackets. Awesome idea!
We close the page with a picture of the compressor housing. The integrated BPV and turbo sped sensor provision have been beaten to death. While cool what I like the most is the prioritization of the BPV discharge. You can see the square opening that directs the BPV discharge. It is shaped to ramp the flow both around the inlet and towards the compressor wheel. I think we should test BPV recirculation function using a turbo speed sensor to show once and for all which setup provides the most efficient use of the charge air. I still think it is full recirc aimed at the comp wheel but the debate rages on until we can preform said test.
