Out of the Meat Locker – Cameron Moore’s Formula Drift Scion FR-S

,

Out back, the rear hub was actually upsized from 5×100 to 5×114.3 using a conversion kit. This allowed for Moore to use Cosmis’ wider 18×9.5” wheels and Nexen P275/40R18 tires. In terms of brakes, he went with a split setup, the stock fist caliper for the pedal brake, and the two-piston Subaru caliper linked to the handbrake.

Finding additional places to save a few grams without breaking the bank is always important. Cosmis’ wheels featured H-cut spokes to remove mass without sacrificing rigidity. The lug nuts were also a fully open design, saving more unsprung weight. A drifter’s lugs are removed so frequently with each wheel change that it was less of a critical part – the chances of a lug breaking during a short run are so small, they didn’t have to be as strong as a road racer’s.

Rounding out the corners, we get a glimpse under the hood at the FR-S’s suspension and steering setup. Moore chose a complete Wisefab kit, allowing for extreme lock angles and increased stability. The Wisefab top plate had extended slots, which gave the team space to push the coilover perch as far outboard as possible with a little selective cutting of the chassis. BC Racing’s ER series coilovers were fitted, and featured a host of adjustments to fine tune the amount of damping required.

BC’s ER coilovers had remote reservoirs in both the front and rear, shown above, with their own secondary piston acting as another source for oil to compress with select adjustment. Wisefab’s kit extended to the rear as well, helping accommodate the suspension for the widened track, while reducing weight via billet aluminum-constructed components. The Wisefab linkages employed a set of spherical CrMo rod ends in lieu of traditional rubber bushings, allowing more ‘squat’ to occur based on the spring rates and weight balance shift as the entire 1,000 hp was sent back through the rear Nexens.

A car can have the most state of the art components in the world, but without the right driver it wouldn’t add up to much. Moore showed he was right at home with this setup in 2017, free to push the car to extreme levels of drift.
