PRI 2015: Part 6

,

D&D Performance is known for high performance transmissions. Here’s its T-56 six-speed manual gearbox, which is based on the TR-6060 tranny used in the 2008-up Mustang GT-500, Camaro, Corvette, Viper, and Challenger. This one is rated to withstand the constant abuse from up to 700 lb-ft of torque.

Superchager Systems Inc (SSI) had its screw- and roots-type blowers on display. New for its 2016 line-up are the F-5 high helix, billet 16-71 high helix, billet 18-71 high helix, and the billet 6-71 fuel blower.

While both the roots-style and twin-screw type blowers look similar and arenconsidered positive displacement superchargers, they are actually quite different. The roots-style, which is the original form of supercharging dating back to the late 1800s, uses 2- or 3-lobe rotors, and acts more like a pump. The twin-screw, on the other hand, uses differently styled rotors that look more like screws, which actually compress the air.  Both offer very quick boost, although the roots style is known to produce higher intake air temps.

The roots style blower has two different rotors it can come with—standard helix and high helix. The standard helix rotors are also referred to as 60-degree rotors, while the high helix are the 120-degree rotors, which indicates how much each rotor twists over its length.

Here’s a look at the SSI roots-type blower on the right, with high helix lobes.

On the left is what a twin-screw setup looks like internally—notice they look like screws from the top.

Pagid didn’t have a large booth but I’ve always been impressed with its products, having used both its “orange” and “blue” pads on the street and track. I have used the latter on both my old turbocharged E36 M3 on the track when I had a 14-in Brembo kit on it, and currently still use Pagid Blues on our Project Supra, which also still stops with Brembo’s original four-pot Gran Turismo kit based off of the Ferrari F50 caliper.
