Project V8 RX-7: Part 17 – Eimer Engineering Arms, Wheel Spacers and the Hunt for Perfect Stance

,

If you’ll recall, we chose to err on the side of caution when we selected the offset for our rear wheels. With only a few Rocket Bunny FD kits out and installed at the time we got our kit, we felt pretty safe with our guess of a -22mm offset.

If you want to have an idea of just how much wider we are going with our new rubber, check out how tiny the stock wheel and tire combo is with our wide body kit installed. We are nearly going twice as wide as stock!

When all was said and done with the wheel tubs and Rocket Bunny widebody kit installed, there was still some room leftover in the wheel well to go a little wider.

Unfortunately, no one makes a tire much larger than 335, so we could not go wider in that direction. In our case, a 10mm spacer would actually push that wheel out just enough to look a little more flush to match our perfectly dialed in front fitment.

We picked up a set of FIC wheel spacers with their own integrated studs.  These are handy because, rather than losing 10mm of stud to wheel nut engagement (or whatever the thickness of spacer you’re using), they bolt up to the existing studs with supplied hardware and then your wheels bolt up to the studs in the spacer itself.

These flat nuts attach the spacer to your stock lugs while still having sufficient thread engagement to be safe.

For the increased loads of track use with these sticky Toyo R888 tires, we will be converting to longer ARP wheel studs and conventional spacers because in a worst case scenario, there is less potential for the stud to rip through the backing material on a spacer this thin (a wider spacer would be less susceptible to that type of failure).
