Michael Schumacher ran the Ring in an F1 car this year which somehow I managed to miss (d'oh!) but as soon as the 24 hours started- the growl of their engines, the excitement in the crowd, and the amazing backdrop of the Eifel Mountains- all was right with the world. And yes, I'm intrigued by which lap was each car's fastest lap. Winners at the end but here are a few of the faster cars:
#18, the Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR placed 7th overall and 1st in class (SP 7); fastest lap- 23 of 87. This is the only car in the top 12 that is not an SP 9 class. |
8th overall is #4, the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra which had its fastest lap near the end of the race- 82nd of 86. Wait, is that Bill Caswell flagging? |
No, you're not seeing double. Green accents versus red ones. The Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (50) was 11th overall. |
The Haribo Racing Team Porsche 911 GT3 R placed 12th overall; fastest 80 of 85. |
The Porsche 997 GT3 R (11) placed 16th overall and 12th in the most competitive SP 9 class with a fastest lap 77 of 84. |
It's amazing how focused the drivers could be with the fortresses built alongside the track. The Ring is a public road and the chalk/paint is signed by the “vandals” (spectators) to wish the drivers well, memorialize those who have died, and draw a penis or twelve. The artwork increases immensely before the 24 Hours. |
