PRI 2016: Part 4

,

Here’s a shot of the Civic’s interior. It’s a very simple Honda with a whole lot of power!

Speaking of Hondas, the Honda Racing booth had some real cool stuff to look at- starting with the all-wheel-drive 2017 Honda Civic Red Bull Global Rallycross car, driven by Sebastian Eriksson.

Interestingly enough, when you look at the stats on the car, they claim 8500 RPM and 630 lb-ft of torque, with a 0-60 MPH time of 1.9-seconds (Dang!). However, while the RPM and acceleration times seem believable, given those numbers I find the torque to be a potential typo (because I think they meant horsepower). Otherwise, that much torque in an engine that turns that many RPM is probably in the 800-plus horsepower range. The Red Bull site claims this car is making “over 600 horsepower”. That said, I’ll believe the 600hp number, but will have to assume peak torque to be in the neighborhood of 400 to 450 lb-ft of torque, by my calculations. That’s more believable torque from an engine this size.

Speaking of small Honda engines making big power, check out the Honda Turbocharged Type-R race engine, which is a prototype. It’s an L4-based 2.0-liter with dry sump oil system and forged connecting rods, and is configurable from 220 to 450hp on 91 octane.

The U.S. F4 Championship race engine is similar to the above, only normally aspirated, and rated at 160 horsepower on 91 octane. Let's check some high-powered Honda goodness on the next page!
