Project Do It All S13, Starting the Chassis Fabrication With ZSM Customs

Christa is small and could get into tight spots to remove insulation and seam sealer.

All of the excess sheet metal was removed from the interior by drilling out the spot welds.  Unfortunately, the welds were unusually tough and the metal was thin so Christa made a few holes by accident.  We will have to weld those up later.

Fortunately, the rust did not go all the way through the body’s metal although removing it took a lot of elbow grease.  Once the car was cleaned up, we took it to ZSM Customs where Zach Mallin could work his magic to improving our chassis.

We added this rear X brace to the cage to stiffen the chassis more and add some resistance to roof crushing.  We used 1.125″ 0.095″ wall DOM tubing for these extra braces. Zach Tig welded everything.  Also, the way the legs of the cage were mounted would not pass tech for some racing associations so some downlegs are going to be added to new floor plates to give the rear part of the cage a better tie-in to the body structure.

  1. Looks like a good starting point – I looked through a couple of the earlier articles on this project and couldn’t find the info, what’s the history of the chassis?

Looking forward to seeing how the remainder of the chassis fab comes together!

      1. Cool that you’re bringing it back to life again! Hopefully there aren’t more surprises like the gas tank lurking.
