Test fitting the 3D printed model manifold.

I borrowed the Garrett G25-660 from my buddy Robin. It’s the turbo off his Pikes Peak car. About the G25-660, it’s GTX3071R Gen2 power in a smaller package with much lower rotational inertia. So, it meets my power target and desire for maximum boost response. Of course, it has other benefits that we covered here.

As with any S2000 low-mount setup, the oil filter will have to be relocated. In place of the stock oil cooler donut thing will be a Canton remote oil filter adapter. The compressor inlet should clear it easily. Here you can also see how we will have to be careful in clocking the compressor housing due to potential interference between the bolt boss and engine block.

Robin went with the 0.92 A/R turbine housing, but I’m going for the smaller 0.72A/R for a more suitable street powerband. The result will be a little bit more clearance to the engine mount. The clearance is important because I will have to do some thermal management here to prevent melting the Hasport engine mount. I will likely get a turbine housing blanket and also wrap the downpipe in exhaust wrap. But I may also make a heat shield for the engine mount too. A thin aluminum heat shield using two of the mounting bolts of the engine mount to the engine block should be easy to do and then put the gold radiation heat transfer reflective tape on top. Maybe all of the above.
The initial test fitment trail went pretty well! Not too bad for working off a couple scans and tape measure measurements. Modern technology is a great thing. The real proof will be when we do a test fit in the car with all the real hardware and the plastic manifold. Hopefully, our design clears the side of the engine bay with enough clearance to allow for engine movement too. Assuming that test goes well, it’ll be a go for having the manifold 3d printed from Inconel.

We tried a few different wastegate placements including between the turbo and the block, but nothing seemed to work quite as well as our final location. Again, the benefit of having the 3d engine scan and representations of the turbo and wastegate, we were able to try out a number of layouts in 3d space. Again, the fear is boost creep. Placing the wastegate on the underside of the manifold between the turbo and block, there’s not a good wastegate flow path. I’m planning to run boost by gear using the Hondata K-Pro, so likely just base wastegate spring pressure in 1st gear and ramp up the boost depending on how much traction I get in the various gears. I imagine the full 15psi of boost in 3rd gear. Well…. actually will be targeting a torque max of 350tq at the crank as that’s what my clutch setup will limit me to. The nice thing about the K-pro is I can shape the boost curve to whatever I want to get the torque curve shape I want.
Also, when my engine was pulled to be built for boost, Project S2000 (AP1) inherited my oil cooler setup. I’m actually going to revert back to the stock oil/coolant heat exchanger donut. As the car isn’t a track car, the stock oil cooler donut will be plenty sufficient. This is my old oil cooler setup for reference: https://motoiq.com/project-s2000-oil-cooling/
