Project SC300 Road Racer: Part 14 – Install it all, y’all

,

Then it was time to run another length of cable around to the Racepak.

After the Racepak, another power cable would go through the firewall and on to the starter. Everything would get gluelined terminals just like the short cable.

We also made sure to put protective boots over all cable ends. Remember, every terminal on a positive cable is basically an exposed battery terminal. And, as always, positive battery terminals should be covered to prevent accidental short circuits.

Since there wasn’t a good place to come through the firewall on the driver side, we went through the passenger side near the rest of the cabling. And, as usual, Tom busted out the drill. And, as always, start small and slowly get bigger. Measure twice, drill once. I mean, drill as many times as needed.

You need a pretty big hole, slightly bigger than the cable, so that you can fit a protective grommet.

You absolutely want a protective grommet around the battery cable. This is a positive cable going through the metal firewall which is essentially ground. A grommet protects the cable from abrasion from the hole. No grommet means over time the vibration of the vehicle will eat through the cable insulation, making connection between the chassis and the positive cable. That will result in a very, very, very bad short circuit. Use a grommet anywhere an electrical cable goes through a bulkhead. Inspect it often.

We measured all the way around to the starter, and then fed the length of the cable back through the firewall to reach the Racepak Smartwire main lug.
