Project SC300 Road Racer: Part 14 – Install it all, y’all

,

You know what this means- more holes.

The halo of the roll bar was directly underneath the roof area where we needed to make a hole, so care needs to be taken not to accidentally drill into the roll cage.

Measure twice, drill once. Tom locates the center of the roof as best he can.

Start with a pilot hole.

You might think you just need a tiny hole for the wire, but don’t forget that the connector at the end has to pass through the hole as well.

The GPS sensor is huge, so we’re not going to cut a giant hole in the roof. The other end of the wire has the connector. The connector for the GPS sensor is a special one, called an SMA.  It’s basically a tiny little coaxial connector, with a threaded fitting. Think of a miniature version of the thing that goes into your cable box or cable modem. This is a pretty standard type of connector for cellular and GPS signals.

Tom is measuring the drill bit to figure out which size hole is the smallest one that will allow the connector to pass through the roof.
