A close view of the exhaust opening.  Imagine how close the exhaust is to the O-ring.
Intake port opening.  Just grinding small amounts can change the port timing quite a bit.  The rotary is like a two stroke where port location is like cam duration and centerline on a four stroke.
You can see how the bridge supports the side seal even with a huge intake port.
With side ports there is no overlap as you can see here.  This makes for a much cleaner engine.
After the side exhaust ports close, you can see how the rotor exhaust port really increases duration by keeping the exhaust going longer in the cycle.
The difference is more obvious here.
