The Car Lovers Guide to Japan, Tomei

Lathes, all operated by true craftsmen. We were amazed to find only old school machine tools in a modern well-regarded engine development center.  Old school handwork with old school craftsmanship is the Tomei way.

Tomei has two cam grinding machines and grinds all of their cams in house. They literally grind the cams in a tiny area the size of a single car garage.  They use a CNC grinder for good precision.

Here are some cam blanks waiting to be ground.

In this room, Tomei has their engine dynos.  They have two, a higher power one and a lower power one. The room is also a clean room where sub-assemblies are put together like cylinder heads and such.

Here is the engine dyno cell.  One dyno is a water brake and the other is a hydraulic brake.

  1. TOMEI is one of those aftermarket names I was familiar with but had no experience with. It’s nice to see how much R&D they put into their products. Great article!
