Nerd’s Eye View: SEMA 2014 Part I

,

Don’t need no stinkin’ mufflers… Just maximum power from minimum backpressure.
Local Motors built this XC2V combat support and evacuation vehicle as part of a DARPA project.
Military stuff needs to be rugged and reliable, so simplicity helps. The frontend is tubular with basic looking upper and lower control arms with a Fox Racing shock. You can also see the sway bar attached to the lower control arm with an end link. Buried deep back is the engine. There appears to be a massive air filter on the intake tube; it probably comes in handy in a desert environment…
A solid rear axle arrangement is used in the rear. The battery is mounted behind and above the axle making it easily accessible. The super long gold-ish rod is the end link going between the axle and rear sway bar.
In the works from Local Motors is this SF01 track car concept. The foundation is this tubular steel chassis. The idea is a simple, lightweight, high power-to-weight ratio track car. Hopefully, affordablility gets baked in as part of the equation.
