Project Civic EF Racecar: Part 3 – Preparation For First MPTCC Race

,

One of the primary safety modifications that needed to be done was adding to the car's existing roll cage door bars for maximum driver safety.  This brought me back to one of my good friends Yannick Sire's fabrication shop appropriately named Sire Custom Performance.
Primarily specializing in domestic muscle cars and off-road vehicles, it's always a fun site to see my Japanese import cars being worked on at the shop.
Here is the configuration I tested at Buttonwillow with, Sparco Rev race seat which is not a head containment version, an expired but still good condition Schroth HANS specific 6 point harness, and door bars that are too low to protect the driver in a wheel to wheel race impact.
The first thing that needed to be done was to cut out the inside door material and glass to make room for the door bars and a side benefit being weight reduction.  Even though we were only adding bars to the driver's side, we gutted the passenger side door as well to pull even more weight out of the car.
Here is the pile of everything we removed, which is most likely double the weight of the tubing we put in for the door bar.  I'm glad to see this dead weight off the car.
Yannick doing some measuring to get an idea of how much material is needed and his overall plan for the additions.  It's fun to see how much fabricators can do based of experience, a sharpie, and measuring tape.
The first tube is cut and slightly bent to get a better perspective of the plan we had brainstormed.  This tube is to be the primary bar that will protrude the furthist into the door itself.
