PRI 2015: Part 3

,

I mentioned earlier that if you wanted to see more Precision Turbos that I would have them at the end of the article. This is PTE’s new Gen2 Pro Mod 80, which is rated at 1400 horsepower.

PTE also brought out a 76mm Gen2 rated at 1300 horsepower. It can also be referred to as a “7688” because of its 88-mm exducer. This turbo is special to PTE because it was developed in response to the Ultra Street rules, and they won the championship by powering Joel Greathouse’s Fox body mustang. Before you go on thinking you’re just going to slap this air-cooled bad boy on your car, keep in mind that this turbo comes with a $3800 price tag.

PTE’s SFI-certified turbochargers have these cross bolts to contain (or at least slow down) any projectile from flying out the back due to a failure at up to 150,000 RPM. PTE reports it was the first to do this.

We saw this interesting looking inlet on the Mountune turbo in its engine setup earlier in PRI Part 2. These are 45-mm inlets designed to comply with the inlet limit imposed by the WRC (World Rally Cross). These turbochargers are the next level up in motorsports, capable of withstanding up to 180,000 RPM shaft speeds and tremendous amounts of heat. This one's got a shaft speed sensor and a vacuum port to measure the vacuum pressure at the inlet. Direct, fresh-air is directed to the turbine housing and keeps the turbo spool-up to within 0.200-sec, essentially creating an anti-lag system. Robin Larsson won the last race of 2015 in Argentina driving a factory Subaru with a PTE unit just like this. Oh, and just as an FYI—this turbo has an MSRP of just under 11 grand!

Thanks for reading our continued PRI coverage! If you’ve missed Part 1 or Part 2, make sure to check them out.  And if you have, we've also got Part 4!
